This course covers the seven steps of creating a waterwise garden; including planning and design, plant selection, soil improvement, irrigation, using mulch, using turf, and maintenance. This online course is approximately 8-10 hours long and is self-paced.

Instructor
Amy Jo Detweiler is an OSU Extension Faculty member in Central Oregon, east of the Cascade Mountains. She is a home and consumer horticulturist and spends much of her time educating homeowners, green industry professionals, and OSU Master Gardeners.
WaterWise Gardening: Choosing the Right Plants
Overview
Learn the process from start to finish of selecting plants for a waterwise garden or landscape. Selecting the right plants is an essential part of designing a landscape that promotes water conservation and is a joy to share with others. This course includes practical exercises, multimedia, and interactive games that help you identify which plants are waterwise and which aren’t. Click on the image to the right to sample an interactive game you will find in this course. This online course is 10-12 hours long and is self-paced.
Learning Objectives
- Learn the process from start to finish of designing and selecting plants for a waterwise garden or landscape.
- Learn how to determine whether a plant is invasive, which would pose a threat to local natural or wild landscapes.
- Learn how to make appropriate selections of trees, shrubs and vines, herbaceous plants, annuals and bulbs and their places in a waterwise landscape.
- Learn about and explore references and websites that assist in selection of plants for waterwise gardens and landscapes.

Instructor
Linda R. McMahan is a Horticulturist with OSU Extension. She holds a Ph.D. in Botany from The University of Texas at Austin, and a J.D. from the Washington College of Law at American University. Although she was born and raised in Oregon, she has lived and worked in most of the regions of the U.S., becoming familiar with wide variations in climate and soils. Linda has worked in universities, government, non-profit plant conservation groups, botanic gardens, and has taught and promoted native plants and water efficient landscape plants for more than 20 years.
